Follow the stages of a sale
An order first needs to execute. Settlement then completes the transfer of securities and cash under the relevant market process. A withdrawal from the investment account to a bank can involve another step. These events may appear close together on a screen while serving different purposes.
For a planned payment, write each stage on a timeline rather than using the word sold to describe them all. A pending order is not an executed trade, and an executed trade does not necessarily mean proceeds are already withdrawable.
Use the rule for the actual market
In the United States, most covered broker-dealer securities transactions moved to a T+1 standard settlement cycle from 28 May 2024, subject to exceptions. The SEC's updated bulletin describes T+1 as one business day after the transaction date. This is a US example, not a universal timetable for every product or market.
A fictional Monday trade with an applicable one-business-day cycle would ordinarily settle Tuesday if both are relevant business days. A Friday trade would ordinarily move to the next applicable business day, not automatically Saturday. Holidays and product-specific arrangements need to be checked.
Older educational pages can still describe previous cycles. Use the provider's current terms and the appropriate market information rather than relying on a search result's short snippet. Record the date on which the timing was checked.
Distinguish trading access from withdrawal access
A platform may allow certain activity using unsettled proceeds under its account rules. That does not mean the same money can immediately leave the account. Buying power, settled cash and available-to-withdraw balances may have different definitions.
Ask whether a bank transfer has a separate cut-off, processing period or verification requirement. Currency conversion can add another dependency. Avoid scheduling an essential bill using only the market settlement rule when the final bank receipt is what matters.
Keep the trade confirmation and follow the account's cash ledger through settlement and withdrawal. If the expected date passes, use the provider's verified support channel with the transaction reference. A clear record of which stage is delayed makes the enquiry more useful than saying only that the money has not arrived.
